Species

Forest Reds is Boral's mix of red coloured Australian Hardwoods. The timber is a mix of mainly Eucalyptus trees from Australia's east coast. Timber is a variety of red colours from soft, light pinks to deep rich burgundy some bronze tones could be present.

Manufacturer

Boral has been developing and producing timber products for well over a century and they remain one of the largest, most experienced and most trusted timber manufacturers in Australia. Boral offers most of the popular Australian timber species in a wide range of products including: flooring, decking, cladding and structural timber, distributed across domestic, international, residential and commercial markets.

Board type

With many modern builds using concrete slabs rather than the more traditional bearers & joists subfloors, thinner timber alternatives like overlay can be used instead of thick structural timber.

• Kiln dried
• Precision milled with a tongue & groove joint system and plain ends
• Continuous solid timber through the entire thickness of the board with a ~5mm wear segment on top
• Raw and unfinished
• Backsawn timber

The timber is packaged into smaller bundles which are limited to 2.4m lengths making it possible to move the timber into upper floors and high-rise buildings. Our overlay still has the same ~5mm thick wear segment retaining the same sanding and longevity advantages as 19mm solid strip flooring.

Grades

Timber has many natural features that tell the story of the living tree. The features seen in Forest Reds are:
• Gum Veins & gum pockets
• Insect trails
• Knots
• Surface checking
• Burrs (aka burls)

This product is available in the following grades:
Standard & better grade; has a wider range of features having mixed cleaner boards and moderately featured boards. It can be thought of as the top 50% cleanest boards.

Installation summary

Solid overlay strip floorboards are typically suitable for gluing &/or nailing over flat, dry and structural subfloors such as plywood, particleboard, existing timber floors or concrete slabs (except 130mm boards aren't suitable for concrete). They come in a raw state and need to be sanded and finished after installation. THIS IS NOT A DIY FRIENDLY PRODUCT, only an experienced installer and sander or a very experienced carpenter should attempt the installation of solid overlay strip floorboards.

Sustainability

Timber is a truly renewable resource, a mature tree is harvested, a young tree grows in its place and a few decades later is ready for harvesting again. Australia's vast forests are carefully, conservatively managed to ensure a responsible amount of wood is harvested. Timber uses a relatively small amount of energy during processing compared to other building materials like metals and concrete, the timber itself is a carbon storer and has a long working life.
